“When you are on a great horse, you have the best seat you will ever have.”
Sir Winston Churchill
Horses are incredible animals. In them we can easily see nobility without conceit, friendship without envy, beauty without vanity. They are man’s willing servants, yet never their slaves.
The essential joy of being with horses is that it brings us in contact with the rare elements of grace, spirit and freedom. Thus, don’t miss the chance to go horse riding in the wonderful, lush Cetina region landscape, and truly feel why the old people used to say: “To ride a horse is to ride the sky”. To end the tour, visit Sinj, a old town full of heritage stories and with a great cuisine you must try!
We depart from Split at 9 am and take a bus ride towards Sinj. We will get at the horse ranch just outside Sinj at about 10 am.
First, take a small break and note the sprawling beauty of the horse ranch. The ranch itself covers 20,000 square meters and includes a corral for the horses, pasture, lawn, sports court and restaurant area.
Then, you will go through with the introduction to the guides and horses. The guides, trained professionals with years of experience, will choose the right horse according the riding abilities for every rider.
Riding along the river Cetina, its beauty will slowly unfold before you eyes, as the gurgling waters of the river sing to the hum of the turning earth. Note the frees in full bloom, the scent of nature enveloping you in a heady, almost palpable mist, and pale petals rocking on the glittering surface of the water, laying in white mats against the banks.
When you get hungry, there will be servings of delicious local specialties and wines and other drinks, as per your choice. Keep your strength, there is still much more to see!
After the riding tour, we will depart for Sinj, to take a walking tour of the city.
After your horse riding odyssey, it’s time to take a walking tour of Sinj. Sinj is a town with a rich cultural heritage and a variety of sights to visit: the clock tower Kamičak, Old Town Fortress, the magnificent Church of the Miraculous Madonna of Sinj, the greatest Marian shrine in southern Croatia, a tombstone Gaius Laberius built into the front wall of a house, the Sinj boy holding a ball, proof that the Cetina Region is the cradle of the second most important thing in the world and the place where football was first played; The Archaeological Collection of the Franciscan Monastery, the Museum of the Cetina Region, the central place of research and exhibition of its rich cultural and historical heritage. To top it all of, Sinj is a modern but green town, with untouched nature, clear, cold waters, mysterious mountains and plenty of delicious gastronomy.
Yet, in the midst of all this glory, the crowning jewel of Sinj is the Alka Knights Court, the former barracks (Kvartiri), a splendid complex and the home of the world famous Sinjska Alka, with its very own Alka Museum. What is Sinjska alka? Learn about it here!
Alka takes place every year in early August to commemorate the 1715 Croatian victory over the Turks who wanted to conquer Sinj fortress. The tournament is more than 300 years old now, and a long time ago it was held twice a year.
Similar competitions, with knights trying to score points by lacing while riding a horse, were held in other parts of Europe, but Alka was the first to put forth a major innovation – in addition to the military and aristocracy, participation rights were granted to normal citizens. Also, Alka is the only tournament of this kind to continuously survive for more than three centuries.
The goal of the lancers in three runs to score as many ‘of points’ (points), which is realized shooting reel with four gaps, while Lancer is on a horse back in full gallop. A hoop in the middle, the so-called “Bull’s-eye”, brings three points, the hoop above it two, and of the hit the other two partitions they get one point. If you visit the Alka Musem, you will learn, see and hear such more about this ancient sport!
